| Place Name | Dunnottar |
| Description | Dunnottar was a civil parish south of Stonehaven on the Scottish coast in what is today Aberdeenshire. It is best known for the dramatic views of Dunnottar Castle meaning "fort on the shelving slope". A chapel at Dunnottar is said to have been founded by St Ninian in the 5th century but had been fortified and suffered sieges in the 7th century as Picts battled Scots. The Scottish Chronicle records that King Domnall II, the first ruler to be called rí Alban (King of Alba), was killed at Dunnottar during an attack by Vikings in 900. The poet Blind Harry relates that William Wallace captured Dunnottar from the English in 1297, during the Wars of Scottish Independence. |
