The Genetic Genealogy Research Network is a dynamic new community for researchers pushing the boundaries of genetic genealogy. Our mission is simple: to spotlight cutting-edge research, spark cross-disciplinary collaboration, and connect the people shaping the future of the field.

In this talk, members of the 23andMe Population Genetics R&D Team will share the new methodological developments that we are spearheading that make it possible to bridge past and present through genetics, including the custom approach we have developed for identifying identical-by-descent (IBD) genetic connections between historical and living people and updates we are making to our family tree inference method, Bonsai, which make it possible to directly place historical individuals into family trees using only their DNA.

Overview:
This session offers a deeper understanding of Y-DNA NextGen SNP genetic genealogy tests like Big Y-700 and YSeq WGS. We will journey from Biology to Data to the Phylogenetic Tree to Geographic Interpretation. Topics include: explanation of raw read alignment to the genome which produces your SNP results; understanding your terminal SNP and why it changes; how to use Novel Variants / Unnamed Variants to extend the phylogenetic tree for your family; and tips on getting the most info and avoiding bugs in current tools using real world examples.
