It lies north of Thornhill and west of Moffat. Celts are believed to have established a significant settlement here prior to the Roman Empire called 'Corda' by Ptolemy. In the 9th and 10th centuries, waves of Gaelic settlers came to the area from Ireland. During the 13th century, William Wallace led a very successful attack against the English Arm in the vicinity of Sanquhar castle. In the 16th century it was the site of the Sanquhar Declaration of Convenanters opposed to Episcopalisation. |
