| Place Name | York |
| Description | York is a walled city, situated at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss. Found by the Romans in 71 AD under the name Eboracum in an area inhabited by the Brigantes tribe of Celts. The city became a provincial capital and grew to a major trading city in the middle ages. It's name evolved from variations over the centures in Old English, Norse, and then Norman influences. Until the industrial age, York was the 2nd most important city in England and was a Viking city from 866 to 954. Later York rebelled against the Norman Conquest and was ravaged by William the Conqueror in 1068. Rebellions against monarches from Yorkshire continued down through the ages. |
