The name and city are traced to the 5th century Kingdom of Elmet which was covered by the forest of "Loidis". Leeds developed as a market town in the Middle Ages. During the Industrial Revolution, Leeds developed into a major industrial centre; wool was the dominant industry but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were important. The town continued growing and sprawled into a metropolis in the 20th century.
