St Botolph's Church (The Stump), in Boston is the largest parish church in England with one of the highest towers in England. The name Boston is said to be a contraction of St Botolph's town or of St Botolph's stone. The Domesday Book of 1086, does not mention Boston by name. However, the settlement of Skirbeck is covered, as part of the very wealthy manor of Drayton. The area of the Fens around Boston was a large wetland until effective draining began in the 1750s.
