| Place Name | Wigan |
| Description | Wigan is a town in Greater Manchester, England. It stands on the River Douglas in the traditional county of Lancashire. Prior to the Romans, Wigan was in the territory of the Brigantes tribe of Celts. Some believe that he Roman settlement of Coccium was established where Wigan lies. In the Anglo-Saxon period, the area was probably under the control of the Northumbrians and later the Mercians. In the early 10th century there was an influx of Scandinavians expelled from Ireland. Wigan is not mentioned in the Domesday Book, possibly because it was included in the Neweton barony. Wigan is believed to have been incorporated as a borough in 1246 following the issue of a charter by King Henry III of England. During the Industrial Revolution Wigan experienced dramatic economic expansion and a rapid rise in the population. |
