| Description | Speldhurst is a village and civil parish in the borough of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, England. This area was among the first colonized by Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century and contained dense woods that were gradually cleared. By about 1000 AD there was a Saxon church at Speldhurst. In 1412, during the Hundred Years War, the leading landowner, Richard Waller, was rewarded for holding French hostages. In 1606, a roadside spring was noted for its Iron and mineral taste and led to the development of a spa. These iron deposits also served a forge noted in the area for many centuries. A novelty pram race and Speldhurst Sausages are its most famous modern aspects. |
