The adjoining countryside is notable for agriculture, racehorse training, Highclere Castle, ruined Donnington Castle and has the former USAF airbase at Greenham Common. Artifacts from a Mesolithic settlement at Newbury have been found. The village was founded founded early in the Norman era and so is not listed in the Domesday Book. Newbury is best known today for its racecourse and the Greenham Common air base. |
